Chapter 8: Self-promotion

The lesson is simple: we must not confuse admiration and respect with fame or celebrity.
If you do great work, if you do effective, original and striking work full of emotional or intellectual resonance, you are unlikely to go unnoticed.
There are many good reasons why it's worth maintaining connectins with your former college, or forging links with new ones. Designers have an unwritten duty to pass on their experience and give support to the next generation of designers.
You must also keep in mind questions of confidentiality.

Your ability to understand your creative process, your ability to observe how you have ideas and then be able to recreate it is an absolutely essential and extremely overlooked part of our business.

Chapter 6: Winning new work

There is more graphic design than ever before, and demand grows constantly. Therefore, there are many new businesses and they need to promote themselves well. Then, they can survive now. Find dedicated new-business person, and find clients.

Chapter 7: Clients

There are artists, but there are no designers without clients. This chapter reminded me of my client. I worked a website and a cookbook for a chef. I love food and I want to work for a company relating to food such as food network or starbucks or other organic restaurants in my country. So, I was really happy to work with the chef. At the beginning, however, I had a pretty hard time because of different taste. I tried to follow what she wanted, but I also tried to put my ideas. She really likes my works and we still meet whenever she comes to Portland. Now we are friends.

Chapter 2: How to find a job

Many hirings are made by studio heads ringing acquaintances and asking them if they've seen any hot talent. It's never a waste of time showing your portfolio to anyone who will look at it. Once you've targeted a studio, you need to find out who is responsible for recruiting. You need to include some sample of work. Designers in busy studios are all busy, so it's better to give them something to provoke an instant response and prompt them to offer to see you. In interviews, your character is under as much scrutiny as your work. When your interviewer asks you about salary you want, tread carefully. Say that you need enough money to live on, and that you are open to reasonable offers, and leave it at that. Your portfolio is your shop window. A portfolio of eight to ten interesting pieces of work is ideal.

Chapter 3: Being freelance

The freelance life suits two types of designers.
The first type is the very able and resourceful individual with specialist skills.
The second type is best characterized as the creative loner.

Cultural awareness is vital for the modern designer, and most designers are culturally aware people. It's why designers are often witty with a sophisticated sense of humor.
The modern designer needs to be a skilled communicator. Graphic design is a non-verbal the benefit of written or spoken commentaries describing the designer's intentions.

In the article Sagmeister really conveys his concern in the lack of true emotional impact that are and graphic design provide these days. On a daily based people are bombarded pretty things on nice paper or "fluff" a Sagmeister called it; all of which have no meaning nor do they move their viewers. Those that he does find very moving and momorable he lists, and realizes are mostly created by fine artists, not graphic designers.

"Don't think of art works as objects, but as triggers for experiences...art is something that happens, it's an experience, not a quality."

By this definition, graphic design can be art and just as moving, as long as it creates an experience. The article goes on to list what qualities art works should have to really touch one's heart.

Typeface

I decided to use this calligraphy font.
The name is 'a spring day.'

Button design

I tried to unite all button designs to one style with the texture and the font. Those are samples I remade.

Postcard design

This postcard is a promotional gift for people who buy the board game. I'm thinking to make about 10 postcards with Korean images and the postcards are mini sizes. People can see various looks of Korea and postcards can be used for short letters from Korean trip.

South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea (ROK) and often simply referred to as Korea, is a country in East Asia, located on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula. It's neighbored by China to the west, Japan to the east, and North Korea to the north. Its capital is Seoul, the second largest metropolitan city in the world and a major global city. South Korea lies in a temperate climate region with a predominantly mountainous terrain. It's territory covers a total area of 100,032 square kilometers and has a population of over 48 million, making it the third most densely populated (significantly sized) country in the world (after Bangladesh and Taiwan). South korea is now a full democracy and presidential republic consisting of 16 administrative divisions. It's a developed country with a high standard of living. It has the fourth largest economy in Asia and the 15th largest in the world. The economy is export-driven, with production focussing on electronics, automobiles, ships, machinery, petrochemicals and robotics. More recently, South Korea has earned an increased cultural popularity around the world known as the Korean Wave.

Research #1 "How to make a board game"

Steps

Think of a theme for your game. Will it be one where you are a pirate and must travel the seas to find lost treasure, or will you be trapped in haunted mansion and must avoid the monsters and ghosts? Use your imagination when deciding. You could use ideas from existing games if you like.
Find a material to put your board on, cardboard or long piece of card stock. Make the board and add start and finishing places. Set out a path or road for the character(s) to travel along.
Design the images and pictures to go on your game.
Print images off onto printer paper, then tape or glue them to your preferred material.
Print off any other pieces, like rules, cards, tokens, etc. Use card board and construction paper provided by teacher
Test play as many times as you can.
Have a friend or another person test the game too. If your friend likes the game then you know that you have a good board game.
Have a fun time playing your board game!

Tips

Model the game board after a map, music note, or movie.. For example, if you are doing this based on a city, you could involve stores from it.
Add spaces that take you to other spaces or triple of your next roll. Use your imagination.
Have more than just one objective. This keeps the game interesting after multiple plays.
Play around with rules. Rather than moving a set number of spaces, for example, have a player be allowed to move freely for a set time period.
Have an objective instead of a finish space -- land on the water fountain 10 times, collect all the gold pieces, etc.
Use variations of colors and patterns for an interesting appearance.
Ask for a clean takeout pizza box from a restaurant or buy some from a restaurant supply for the base.
Minute timers, dice with 6 to 32 sides, and replacement playing pieces are available at game and comic book stores.
For really young players, instead of a standard dice with numbers, you can make a dice which corresponds to the colors of the game spaces, or make cards that show which color to move to (like in CandyLand).
Use a ruler when drawing in order to make it look nice and professional.
Don't rush, but don't do it at the last minute.
Get other opinions before you finalize it.
Once you've put on your final touches, you can laminate it or put on a large piece of clear tape to protect it.
Make it fun -- no one will play it if it is boring!
You can make an end spot, or you can make it loop like Monopoly does.
Make it unique -- people won't want to play it too much if it's already been done.
Be Creative Bright colors or colors that grab your attention are always good

Warnings

Make the game fair with consistent rules.
Anything 3D should be done on sturdy paper.
Make the game rules fair.
Don't make the pieces too small.

Cultural Probe: Insights into Barbie in China
we designed a cultural probe packet that would be used to gain insights of how young Chinese children perceive Barbie.

Problem Space
Mattel will be building the largest Barbie store in the world in Shanghai. As part of that, they propose a large installation that children can interact with while at the store. In order to understand perceptions of Barbie and drive insights as to what installation to design, a cultural probe packet would be used as a data research tool.

Design Approach
Cultural probes are a great way to get rich qualitative data from target groups, even remotely. We initially interviewed our Chinese classmates and friends to get a glimpse of what their lives were like as teenagers. We had to be careful when designing our packet to make sure it was culturally situated and not stereotyped. For example, the colors red and white for e.g. have different connotations in China when compared to Western perceptions.

Outcomes
Our final probe packet targeted young Chinese girls in the 6-11 age bracket. We provided a camera so they could take pictures of their room, their friends and family and general environment. This would help provide an understanding as to what they value in their lives. Coloring exercises with crayons and a Barbie logo and a ‘dream party’ picture would help us gauge their color preferences as well as entertainment choices. Stickers and a doll cutout were included to inform fashion/design choices. Scissors (safe!) and glue were the last items to help them with the sticker exercises.

Future Work
We would have liked to include an exercise that made use of different kinds of fabric that would provide insights regarding texture choice.

AIDS and HIV in Africa

This article about the HIV prevention campaign in Kenya explains that the creative team included members from their target audience in order to effect culturally appropriate aesthetics for cross-cultural communication. Research had shown that clear transmittance of information occurs when the encoders share the same culture as the decoder's, so the Kenyans designed their own propaganda using their own visual language that would help get their message across boldly.

1. Send Me to S.Korea
I love traveling and I have traveled about 16 countries so far. During my travels, the natives who are interested in Asian or want to test their language skill sometimes say "Hi" in Japanese or Chinese. When they ask me where I'm from and I answer "I'm from Korea," they even don't know where Korea is. In addition, I'm dumbfound when I get the silly question such as "Are you from North Korea?" When Foreigners know products or food from my country to Japanese or Chinese things, I'm unbearable. That's why I thought about this topic for my thesis/ Research project. I'd like to inform South Korea and to learn more about my country if I didn't know by research.

Audience: My main audience would be anyone who likes to play boardgame or wants to know about my country or is planning to visit S.Korea. From the boardgame, people will participate, enjoy and learn more.

Reading #2 "Fluxus"

In a word, Fluxus is performing arts in the 1960s. Fluxus artists wished art to be life as well as creating.

NamJune Paik (1932~2006)

While I was searching Fluxus, I got to know one Korean Fluxus artist, NamJune Paik. NamJune Paik started artistic activities from 1960s in the prime of the anti-art movement. In the era for social and cultural changes, he had the iron will to combine technological images with desire for expression and a conceptual meaning of performing arts.

the mongol tent (1993)

"The Mongol tent" is one of his works in 1993 and the motive is friendship with Joseph Beuys who was a leader in the early time of Fluxus and was a friend. During the World War, Joseph Beuys's airplane had crashed in Mongolia and escaped death in Mongolian's tent. There are also many Joseph's art works motivated by this story, but NamJune Paik brought a yurt from Mongolia for commending their friendship. It's not an art work that is funny or enjoyable, but we are impressed by silence and the importance of friendship beyond time and space through the story.

As Fluxus artists wished, I think everyone can be an artist because art is not always or only made in a special situation, It's life. We should understand the point of view from an ordinary interest.

This story goes that the writer met Laura and Laura did assignments on LearningToLoveYouMore by Harrell Fletcher. From her assignments, her story was introduced to many people in the world and the writer also got to know her more and to love her more. After I read this story, I started to be interested in design with people, Social design and I found an interesting design event.

There is Seoul Design Olympiad 2009 in my country, Korea now. SDO is a comprehensive design culture festival for people from every place, it's organized for the city of Seoul to leap as the center of world design and culture on the occasion of its designation as the WDC(World Design Capital)2010 and this event is hoped to stimulate the economy by emphasizing design's importance and its utilization by the city. This year the theme is "I'm a designer and we are all designers." The objectives are creating a friendly atmosphere for the citizens, providing a relaxing and enjoyable experience for the visitors, Maximizing participation and experience of various entities.

i-sky

One of art works that I think it's a similar case to Love Laura More is 'i-sky.' This artwork is set up in Jam-sil stadium. About 1400 of vertical louvers with steel wire is used at an altitude of 25 meters of the stadium. The vertical louvers having different sizes express soft geographical features of mountain in Seoul and each louver has various messages by people. People who visit the stadium look at the sky with the artwork and get will of overcoming the recession and positive power.
We are not living alone. We are living together and we are communicating. If we can share our story or feeling, we can make better society. It's really a meaningful thing that studying activities contributing to society and practicing them as a designer. Having time to think about social role and responsibility as a designer is important to develop myself and to convey my message to people.
